The renovation and restoration of the Maastunnel in Rotterdam started in 2017: after 75 years, this national monument is in need of maintenance.
From June 2017, the first of the two car tunnels where closed to repair the concrete and to restore the tunnel to current safety requirements.
In addition to the car tunnels, the cyclists and pedestrian tunnel are also being tackled considerably. The escalators are completely restored and cleaned. Part of the repair is the installation of a fully automated lubrication system on the escalator drive chains. This system, installed by Smeertechniek Rotterdam, will ensure that all chains on the 8 escalators are lubricated efficiently and cleanly. On both the north and south sides, 24 chains are operating from one central lubrication system. This means that the escalators no longer need to be lubricated by hand after 75 years. It is an honor for us as a Rotterdam company to cooperate!
